I've got a sump pump that's around 14 years old, and it's been recommended that I replace it because it seems to be overworking and getting too hot. They suggested I leave it unplugged for now. I have a water-powered backup, so I'm not too worried about flooding for the time being. But I've noticed that water seems to only flow into the sump pit when the pump is plugged in. Is that normal? The pit is a little over half full, so I'm curious when the backup system would actually kick in.

It's pretty normal for the water flow to stop once the levels outside equal the levels inside the pit. So, if that's the case, you might just be seeing the same water cycle when the pump's off. Keep an eye on that!
Honestly, that doesn't sound normal. The water should keep flowing into the pit, whether the pump is on or off. It's possible your old pump caused some kind of blockage that's only relieved when it has power, likely due to a check valve issue. I’d check the drain tile too, just in case it’s being redirected.
