Why is Replacing Doors So Expensive?

I recently had Lowe's come out to give a quote for replacing my entryway door and an interior door leading to the garage. They quoted me $2650 to replace the entire frame of the garage door, which seems high, especially since the door itself costs $400. For the entryway door, they said I can't just swap the door—I'd need to replace the whole frame and side glass, which is really confusing! Can anyone explain why the costs are so high or what's going on with the installation process?

Replacing a door slab into an existing frame is tricky since it often takes more labor and can easily lead to errors. That's probably why they suggested replacing the entire frame instead, even if it feels expensive!

Yeah, installing doors can really rack up costs! The price can vary based on your area, but generally, you're looking at $1500-$2000 typically. Remember, it’s not just about hanging a door; you also have to factor in all the finishing work like painting and trim. Plus, switching that garage door to an exterior one might require additional work to meet local codes, like needing a self-closing feature. Definitely check on that!

It's pretty standard to replace both the door and frame together, especially for an exterior door that requires weather sealing. The $2650 sounds a bit high, though—it’s a good idea to shop around for a few different quotes. Lowe's usually contracts out their installations, so you might be able to find a better deal elsewhere!
