I've been on the lookout for a sale on the DCF 891. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck finding one yet. I do know the difference between the hog ring and the detent pin versions of the tool, but I'm curious - why is the hog ring version generally priced higher than the detent pin?

The detent pins are a bit trickier to remove sockets from and are better suited for keeping one size on for a while. On the other hand, the hog rings make it a breeze to swap between socket sizes quickly. While detents hold better most of the time, hog rings are more convenient if you're constantly changing sockets.
I actually saw a sale for the DCF 891 hog ring version recently on Woot for around $181! I'm not sure if the sale is still active, though—it might have ended yesterday. It's always worth keeping an eye out for deals like that!
Honestly, they probably just sell fewer detent pin versions, which means they go on sale more often to clear stock. From my experience, detent pins provide stronger retention, especially if you don’t align the socket hole perfectly. But if a hog ring can fit snugly on a socket, it can hold pretty well too. I personally prefer using a detent pin when available because it just works better for me!
That makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining!
