I recently moved to the Pacific Northwest and I'm updating some parts of my older home. Currently, there's no soffit, and while looking at other properties, I've noticed many roofs have ventilation where shingles overlap a thin vent. Hardiboard with tiny holes seems common too, but it doesn't look functional to me. I'm interested in using vinyl soffit with J-channel, but I can't find any suppliers here. Is there a reason why vinyl soffit isn't used as much in this area compared to the Midwest?

I've got to say, it gets really hot in the Midwest too, yet vinyl seems to hold up just fine there. People might just need to do a bit more research about how well it can perform under proper conditions, I guess.
I wouldn't validate the melting theory too much. In the Midwest, vinyl siding does just fine, even in summer heat. I think it might be about install quality rather than the material itself. Maybe folks are just not aware or hesitant about it here. Stick with good quality stuff and it should be okay!
One reason vinyl soffit might not be popular in the PNW is that it can melt in high heat. I had some vinyl on my house that actually melted because it got too hot, although it might also depend on how it's installed. Just something to consider if you're looking into it!
