Why isn’t my multimeter measuring voltage?

I've got a multimeter that seems to have continuity and fresh batteries, but it won't measure voltage. I've checked and have the leads connected correctly – red is hot and black is negative – and I've set it to 200V AC for measuring a household outlet, which should be around 120V. But I'm getting zero readings. Could my multimeter be faulty?

Have you tried switching the multimeter to the range AC setting instead of just the 200V setting? If that doesn't work, you might want to test with a DC setting, like off your car battery. You could rule out a fault there.

It sounds like there may be an issue with your multimeter. Have you checked the model and manufacturer? Sometimes, a broken lead can cause problems. If you have a spare set of leads, give those a shot to see if that helps!
