Why isn’t my water heater producing hot water after being off for a while?

I recently returned home after being away for 2 months, during which time I turned off my water heater and the gas. The gas company came out, restarted the gas, and relit the pilot on my water heater, but I'm still not getting any hot water. I've set the temperature to the maximum, and the water heater is about 4.5 years old. It was working fine before I left. Any ideas on what might be going wrong?

First thing’s first, check if the pilot light is actually lit. You should see a small viewing window on your heater that lets you confirm if the flame is still going. Sometimes the pilot can go out unexpectedly. If it’s lit and still no hot water, the thermocouple could be the issue—if you have one that uses it. It’s crucial for allowing gas in. Just make sure to double-check these things before calling in a professional.

Have you checked the circuit breaker for your water heater? Sometimes, even gas water heaters can have an electrical component, and if the breaker is tripped, that might cause issues. But keep in mind, many gas units don’t have any electrical connection. If everything seems fine, it might be time to reach out to a home warranty service if you have one; they can often send a technician to take a look.
