I'm considering a Kohler Underscore bathtub and I've noticed they offer two versions: one with a flange and one without. From what I've gathered, the flange seems to provide extra protection against leaks that could happen past the tiling, which sounds beneficial to me. However, I'm curious if there are any downsides I'm overlooking given the slight price increase. What do you all think?

Sounds like you've got the right idea! I used a tub without a flange before, and I had issues with water sitting at the caulking line against the tile, which led to mold and re-caulking struggles. The flange should help minimize that problem for sure.
You’ve got solid logic there. One tub might be geared more for new installations while the other could be better for retrofits. Definitely keep in mind how you’ll be fitting it into your space!
The tub with the flange is generally designed for alcove installations, where the tub is enclosed on three sides by walls. It helps better with sealing and prevents leaks. On the other hand, the tub without a flange is meant for drop-in styles, where it sits in a flat deck. So, it really comes down to how you're planning to install it!
