Why Won’t My Door Lock from the Outside?

Hey everyone! I've recently had a neighbor install a lock on my door, but it only seems to lock from the inside. The key lets me unlock it from outside if it's locked from the inside, but I need it to lock from the outside so I can secure my house when I'm away for a while. I'm wondering what could be causing this issue and if it's something I can fix myself with basic tools. I do have a video demonstrating the problem, but I can't share it directly here. Any suggestions?

It’s possible the lock is simply misaligned or not compatible with your door’s frame. When you try to turn the key from outside, does it turn freely or does it feel like something is stuck? Don’t forget to check the lock model too, as some might be re-keyable to match your existing key, which could resolve the issue. Honestly, it’s a bit concerning that your neighbor did this without consulting a pro, especially since it’s a security feature!

That's a good point! I'd definitely check with a pro if you can't figure it out. Security is key after all!

It sounds like you might have a lock type that doesn't allow external locking, or maybe the mechanism is stuck. Have you tried turning the key all the way in both directions? Sometimes the key might feel stuck if there’s an alignment issue. Just a tip: check if the lock has a rectangular hole next to the keyhole—this might give some clues about its functionality. In any case, if you're unsure, getting a professional to take a look could save you some hassle!
