Why won’t my garage door open properly anymore?

I've been having some trouble with my garage door lately. A couple of months ago, it started to act up and doesn't always open on its own like it should. The motor definitely runs when I try to open it, but the door doesn't budge until I give it a little lift, then it catches and opens up. However, when the door closes, it works fine when I try to open it immediately. I'm wondering if there are any specific things I should check, or should I just bite the bullet and get a new opener? Keep in mind, the opener is around 10 years old.

Don’t overlook the starter capacitor; it could be on its last legs. It's a cheap fix at about $5, but you’ll want to inspect it for any signs of leakage or swelling. If you have a multimeter, you can check its impedance. Swapping it out is pretty straightforward. Just a little maintenance might save you a lot of money!

It sounds like your spring might be broken. Those things can really mess with how your opener works. If that’s the case, you’ll need to replace it. It can lead to the opener burning out if it has to work too hard, so don’t wait too long to check it out!

You might not need to rush into buying a new opener just yet. Start by checking the garage door itself. Try pulling the emergency release rope to see if you can open the door manually. If it opens easily, that's a good sign. Check the springs too—are they holding up? Also, make sure all the rollers, cables, and pulleys are in decent condition. Don’t forget to lubricate both the opener and the door. If it’s still giving you issues after that, consider adjusting the force settings on the opener. I bet it’s not as broken as you think!
