I'm having a bit of trouble with framing my walls and shelves. Despite spending time to ensure my board lengths are spot on—within 1mm of each other—the top plate just doesn't sit flush with all the studs. I'm working with lumber from Home Depot, and my past experiences haven't been great either. Is this a common issue or am I missing something in the process?

Make sure your saw is calibrated for 90-degree cuts. It's super important for everything to fit properly. And yes, some people do use wooden shims under the top plate if there's a small gap—just make sure they’re tucked in nicely!
Could you share a picture of your setup? It's a bit hard to pinpoint the issue without seeing how everything lines up.
I mean, the top plate has gaps where it meets the studs. Maybe using wooden shims with some wood glue would help?
