Will DIY Electrical Work Affect My Home Insurance Rates?

I'm thinking of installing a 240v EV charger in my garage. It seems pretty simple to me since the electrical panel is nearby, it's new, and the load balance looks good. However, I've read that if I take on major electrical work myself as an owner/builder, my home insurance premium might increase. I'm curious if that's true, especially since I'm looking to save around $1000 based on the quotes I've received.

I've done a ton of DIY electrical projects, including rewiring a whole house, and I never had issues with my insurance. Just make sure you get any necessary permits and follow local codes. That might help keep your insurance company happy if they ever ask!

Good to know! Permits definitely make a difference!

Yeah, I think keeping everything documented is key.

You really don't have to tell your insurance company about every little project you do around the house, but there are some risks. If your DIY work leads to a fire or other damages, that could complicate your claim later if it turns out the work wasn't up to code or wasn't reported. Just keep that in mind!

I see your point. It's a gamble, especially if something goes wrong.

Totally! It's better to be safe than sorry.

Where did you come across that info? It's always a good idea to check directly with your insurance provider. They can give you the most accurate advice based on your specific policy.
