Will Galvanized Brackets Stain Cedar Posts?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to mount an 8x8 cedar post for roof support and I've got some concerns about using galvanized brackets. I've heard that galvanized metal can cause black streaks on cedar, but I'm unsure if simply having contact with the post will lead to staining or if it only happens when screws penetrate the wood. My setup has the bottom of the post hidden under a deck that's 3 feet off the ground, with the bracket above ground on concrete. So the post won't touch the ground at all. Does anyone know if the galvanized bracket could still cause staining to the cedar, or should I consider spending extra on stainless steel supports?

It sounds like you’re doing a great job planning! Just to clarify, if the post is completely above ground and you're using galvanized brackets above the deck, you shouldn't see any staining from just contact. The black streaks usually happen when there's moisture involved, and the direct penetration usually causes more problems. If your post is supported properly and not in direct contact with soil, you might be fine with the galvanized option. But if you’re really worried, stainless is definitely the safer choice, albeit pricier.

I hear you, and it might not be a huge issue. As long as the bracket is above the deck and there's no direct exposure to moisture or ground contact, you might not get staining from the galvanized material. If you are still concerned and want peace of mind, go for the stainless steel supports; that way, you can avoid any potential future issues and headaches. It’s more upfront, but could save some trouble later!
