Will Homemade Evaporust Damage Japanning on Hand Planes?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

I'm looking for some advice on restoring hand planes, specifically regarding the use of homemade Evaporust. In the past, I've used it to strip paint off various items, and I'm curious whether it could potentially harm the japanning on my planes. Any thoughts?

What do you mean by homemade Evaporust? Are you using a specific recipe from YouTube or something? Just curious about how that compares to the commercial stuff.

From my experience, I've used homemade Evaporust on a dozen planes, and it hasn't removed any japanning, even on some pretty rough ones that I soaked for a long time. It seems effective without damaging the finish.

Generally, Evaporust doesn't affect japanning, so you should be okay. Just to be safe, it might be a good idea to do a spot test first to see how it reacts with your specific japanning.
