A friend of mine is heading to jail for 5-10 years, and he has over 30 Milwaukee M18 HD and fuel batteries. I'm wondering if these batteries will still be good after all that time in storage. Should he keep them, or would it be smarter to sell them now and buy new ones later?

They’ll likely need some regular maintenance, like recharging, to prevent them from going bad. If they're stored without any power access, they might not fare well for that long. Ideally, they should be kept at around 50% charge and in a cool place.
From my experience, if batteries are stored improperly or dropped below a certain voltage, they won’t hold a charge anymore. It’s risky to keep them for more than a year without proper maintenance. I’d recommend selling most of them just in case.
Honestly, I think selling them is the way to go. In ten years, battery technology is bound to have advanced a lot! You could use the money for essentials while your friend is away. It’s a win-win situation.
