Will My Plants Survive After Getting Watered with Milk?

I accidentally watered my plants with a cup that my roommate used for milk, and I didn't realize until it was too late! I used a full cup of this milk-water mixture on my ivy and half a cup on my Christmas cactus before I caught the smell. I'm really worried about my plants since they're my first house plants and I've managed to keep them alive for a year! Is there anything I can do to save them, or are they doomed? I tried adding fresh water to help flush it out, but I'm not sure if that will work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you might need to change the soil since the milk can cause it to stink as it rots. Just adding water isn’t likely to fully fix the problem. It won’t harm the roots directly, but you definitely want to avoid any rotting. If you're low on funds, try to get new soil as soon as you can to help your plants! You might also want to rinse the roots gently if you can.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely keep an eye out for some soil.

Don’t panic too much! I’ve actually used diluted milk as a fertilizer for outdoor plants before, and they usually bounce back fine. Your plants might be okay, so just keep an eye on them and monitor how they’re doing. If you notice any issues with the soil, then you can think about replacing it.
