What Should I Do About This Cut in My Siding?

I recently discovered a rectangular cut in my siding (see photo). I'm not sure how long it's been there, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't there when I bought the property a couple of years ago. Should I just seal it up with exterior caulk, or should I open it up first to check for any potential water damage?

You definitely want to take a look inside before sealing it up. It’s possible that the cut could allow moisture in, which might lead to some serious damage. Check for any signs of water damage or mold before applying caulk. Better safe than sorry!

If you haven’t noticed it for a year, that’s a bit surprising, but hey, life gets busy! Just make sure to inspect it and seal it up properly once you know it’s all dry and damage-free.
