Best Techniques for Splitting Logs for Bowls and Spoons?

Hey everyone! I'm interested in learning about the best ways to split logs specifically for making bowls and spoons. I want to ensure that I waste as little material as possible and maintain maximum control during the splitting process. I've found using an axe or maul challenging, and I've seen carvers utilize a sledgehammer and wedges, which seem to offer more control. Would that method also be effective for hard woods? Any tips or techniques you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for precision in your splits, I highly recommend trying a Froe. It’ll give you better control compared to a maul and wedges, which can tear fibers and stress the wood more. From my experience, splitting greenwood takes some effort, but it's easier to slice and carve with.

Thanks! I’m definitely going to check out the Froe. Sounds like it could really help with my projects. I have had the same experience as you with tougher local wood.

Green hardwood can definitely make a difference. It's often simpler to work with, but keep in mind that the wood type can change the experience. I've actually found some green wood tougher to manage than dry wood at times.

So true! I’ve faced similar challenges with my local wood too, sometimes it’s a bit of a fight even when it’s green.
