Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to build the BMW project by Steve Ramsey, but I'm a bit stuck on materials since plywood prices are through the roof. He recommends a single 4x8 sheet of 3/4 inch plywood for the top and shelves. After checking out my local big box store, I'm considering using a 2x12 fir board (cut in half) for the top and some cheaper 1/2 inch plywood for the shelves. This combo is a lot cheaper than the 3/4 inch plywood. Am I missing anything important with this plan? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't recommend the fir for the top. It's heavier and could cause issues with your implement, plus if it's wet, it might warp on you. You’d likely get a better finish with plywood, which is important for a solid workbench. Consider investing in good plywood – remember, it's a tool you're building!
What are plywood prices like where you are? I can get decent 3/4" plywood for around $33, which would suit this project well if you're selective about your piece. Don't skimp too hard—going too cheap now might cost you more down the line.
Exactly! And don’t be fooled, you don’t necessarily need Baltic birch unless you’re going for something fancy.
You might want to think about the stability of the materials. Plywood is less likely to warp or bow compared to fir. If you can secure some straight fir, you’ll save money, but just keep this stability issue in mind!
The only non-treated 3/4 plywood I found was over $50! I'll keep searching for a better deal. Thanks for the encouragement not to cheap out!
