I'm looking to purchase a bandsaw and have a few questions. I anticipate using it a lot, so I'm tempted to invest in a larger and nicer model from the start, even though a benchtop model would suffice for my current projects. I'm particularly drawn to bandsaws because I have safety concerns with table saws. I think a bandsaw would be perfect for tasks like cutting tenons quickly and safely handling small cuts at the ends of workpieces to avoid kickback.
However, my workshop is currently in my basement, and I'm worried about the weight of these larger bandsaws, which seem to weigh anywhere from 200-300+ lbs when shipped. My wife and I are unsure if we can safely carry that weight down a flight of stairs. Plus, we'll need to move whatever we buy later when we transition to a garage workshop this summer.
So, I'm curious:
1. How do larger bandsaws ship? For example, does a weight of 205 lbs mean we're lifting that full weight, or do they come in parts that we can carry down piece by piece?
2. Should I just opt for a smaller bandsaw like the Rikon 10-3061 or Grizzly G0948 for now, and consider a larger one later once the garage is ready?
Any recommendations on bandsaw models around $450 for benchtop or about $1k for freestanding? I've seen some Laguna models that look great, but again, I'm concerned about their 300+lbs weight, so any tips on moving them would be appreciated!

If carrying it down is a major concern, consider renting an appliance dolly from a local store. It’s a solid option for around $20 and can make transporting heavier items much safer and easier!
I personally own the Grizzly bandsaw you're looking at, and it's been a great choice! It ships in two main parts—the heaviest section is around 90 lbs, making it manageable to carry down into your basement. I also recommend getting a mobile base, and stock up on extra blades in different sizes for versatility!
That's a really good idea! I used an appliance dolly when I moved my table saw, and it made a huge difference.
