Getting Started with Growing Edible Plants on a Balcony

Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie to gardening and I could really use some guidance. I live in Poland and my balcony faces west. I've got some chive bulbs and seeds for lettuce, carrots, and radish, and I'd love to grow some edible plants. I read that chives can be planted in March and that I should use a deep pot, but that's about all I know. What else should I consider planting in such a limited space? Any tips would be appreciated!

You should definitely consider planting garlic, too! It’s super easy and flavorful. Just a heads up, garlic prefers to be planted in the fall because it needs some cold for the bulbs to form. If you've missed that window, you can take a bulb, chill it in the fridge for about four weeks, and then plant it.

If you say I can grow garlic, then for sure I will try! I use it every day in my kitchen! 😀

For your chives, lettuce, carrots, and radishes, you're on the right track! Just remember to sow the seeds directly into their final pots. Carrots take a little while, about 2-3 weeks, to sprout and need to stay moist. A neat trick is to water them, cover with a board to keep moisture in, and check regularly until they pop up. Just don't forget to thin them out afterwards so they have room to grow!

OMG, that’s so informative! Thanks! I read that carrots aren't the best for balcony gardening—have you tried it yourself?
