Help! My Cat is Peeing in the Floor Vent – What Should I Do?

So, I've got a bit of a situation with my 15-year-old cat. Lately, he's been peeing in the floor vent on the first floor, and it's becoming a real problem. I've already cleaned the area with enzyme cleaner, but that hasn't helped at all. When I turn on the AC or heating, the smell spreads throughout the house, even to the farthest room upstairs, and it's particularly bad in the basement near the furnace. I've consulted a friend who works in HVAC, and he thinks the cat pee might have gotten into the coils of my AC unit. He mentioned that duct cleaning probably won't resolve the issue and suggested that I might need to replace the whole AC unit, which is from 1998. I've also been looking into replacing the ductwork – any insights on if that would work? If so, could someone please explain the process to me in simple terms?

I’d start by hosing the area down again with a good enzyme cleaner. It might take a few tries to really break down the urine. Also, if you're trying to look deeper into the ducts, invest in an endoscopic camera that’s lighted and can reach from one floor to the other. You can take photos to see what you’re dealing with. Just bear in mind that if the ducts are wrapped in insulation, the urine might have seeped in there, making it trickier to manage. You really want to assess the entire setup first before deciding on ductwork replacement.

Yikes, that’s a tough spot to be in! I’d be pretty upset too. Definitely get it sorted out quickly before it becomes a bigger issue. But also, keep looking on the bright side – at least your cat hasn’t decided on your couch as his new target!
