I've got a small crack in my basement foundation that leaks during heavy rain. I've gotten some estimates, and they're pushing for a $16k sump/drain system that would require a lot of demolition and disconnection of my sewage pipe. My house has been okay for 100 years without one, so I'm hesitant. I really just want to fix the leak for now. I'm thinking of addressing the exterior first since there are big gaps between the sidewalk and the foundation. Should I start there, and what would be the best way to fix it?

Before diving into costly fixes, make sure to check your yard. The ground should slope away from the foundation, and the downspouts need to direct water away, especially since you mentioned the leak is in the back. It's easier than it sounds, and you could avoid bigger problems by getting the outside right first! Based on what you've described, filling those gaps around the foundation could be a good start. Maybe DIY it with some sealant? That way, you won’t have to tear everything up just yet!
A good step is to prevent water from pooling near your foundation; most issues can stem from that. Make sure there's proper drainage, and as you mentioned, dealing with those sidewalk gaps is key. Once that's handled, you'll reduce the likelihood of leaks significantly!
