Tips for Adding Color to Wood Furniture Without the Mess

Hey everyone! I'm currently renovating an old piece of furniture and I'm trying to make the most out of the existing materials. The wood has quite a few insect holes, and rather than filling them in with wood paste of the same color, I thought it would be cool to use a black filler. The downside is that when I sand it down, the black dust just gets stuck in the wood fibers and clogs my sanding paper, creating a bit of a nightmare. I've tried using acrylic oil, tainted wood paste, and even resin, but no luck so far! I find that I either have to sand down too much wood (and then new holes pop up) or end up with a messy finish. How would you tackle this situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

Have you thought about using black CA glue? It's pretty effective for filling gaps and should hold up well. Just make sure to check out the right brands, like the one from Pen Blanks that’s recommended online.

What type of wood are you working with? Also, do you have a dust collection system hooked up to your sander? It helps a ton! If it looks like pine, it could possibly be cherry—hard to say what they used back then for sure!

Yeah, I have a Makita vacuum connected to it, which helps. The wood is tricky to identify, but it does look a lot like pine!
