I'm gearing up to plant in a few raised beds this year! Last year, we had one that didn't flourish, probably due to insufficient sunlight. We have a 6-month-old mini Aussie pup who loves to dig, so composting is off the table for us this time. As a fisherman, I recently filleted some crappie and froze the leftovers. I'm thinking of burying the fish remains midway in the soil to enhance quality. Is there a chance I could overdo it with the fish? The three raised beds measure about 2.5' x 4', and one already contains bagged compost mix from last year, while the others are still empty.

Burying fish can definitely work as fertilizer since they provide great nutrients for your plants! Just be cautious though, as your dog and other animals like raccoons might dig them up if they smell the fish. If you have a blender you don’t mind sacrificing, you can blend the fish guts with water to create your own fish emulsion. It’ll help break them down faster and you should bury it about a foot deep to keep any lingering odors away!
Just a heads up, you might attract some neighborhood cats with that fish! They love a good digging spot. If you're worried, maybe consider some soil microbes or the bokashi technique to help your fish break down without drawing in unwanted critters. It also might keep your pup from digging since it's contained!
